5 Mindfulness Practices to Step Up Your Recovery

July 11, 2026

Mindfulness gets oversold as a cure and underused as a tool. In recovery it's a tool — a trainable skill for noticing what's happening in your body and mind a few seconds earlier than you used to. Those few seconds are everything, because cravings are won or lost in the gap between trigger and reaction.

Why mindfulness earns its place in recovery

Addiction narrows attention: the discomfort arrives, and the mind jumps straight to the one thing that has always relieved it. Mindfulness widens that tunnel. Research on mindfulness-based relapse prevention shows it reduces both craving intensity and the risk of returning to use — not by making urges disappear, but by changing your relationship to them. An urge you can observe is an urge you can outlast.

"A craving is a wave. You don't have to stop it — you have to outlast it."

Darrel Wilson

Five practices to start this week

1. Urge surfing. When a craving hits, set a ten-minute timer and just describe the sensation to yourself — where it sits, how it changes. Cravings peak and fall like waves; most break within twenty minutes. 2. Slow exhale breathing. Breathe in for four counts, out for eight. A longer exhale downshifts your nervous system faster than any advice can. 3. The body scan. Two minutes, head to toe, naming what you feel. It rebuilds the body awareness that substances spent years numbing. 4. Anchored routines. Attach thirty seconds of full attention to something you already do daily — the first sip of coffee, the shower, locking the door. 5. The evening pause. One minute before bed: what was hard today, what did I handle, what am I glad happened. That last one borrows from gratitude practice, and it works.

These land better with a guide than an app. Mindfulness work is woven into our counseling services, and if getting to an office is the obstacle, our online sessions work from anywhere in California — parked car included.
