The average therapy session in Los Angeles costs between $150 and $300. For a lot of people, that means choosing between getting help and paying rent. We built our practice around a different idea: the people who need counseling most are often the ones who can least afford it.
Our sliding scale starts at $30 per individual session and is based on your household income — no pay stubs, no paperwork, no awkward negotiation. You tell us what you can afford within our range, and that becomes your rate. Every session is with a licensed therapist or a registered associate working under licensed supervision, whether you pay $30 or $90.
We offer individual counseling, couples sessions, family counseling, group therapy, and relapse prevention — in person in Los Angeles or by telehealth anywhere in California. Government assistance is accepted: if you’re enrolled in Medi-Cal, your sessions may cost you nothing — see our Medi-Cal therapy page.
Before you commit to any practice — including ours — it helps to see the whole landscape. Here’s what people in LA typically pay per session in 2026, and where each option makes sense.
| Option | Typical cost | Typical wait | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private practice therapist | $150–$300 / session | 1–4 weeks | Specialized needs, out-of-network insurance benefits |
| Online subscription platforms | $60–$100 / week | A few days | Messaging-first support, mild concerns |
| Community mental health clinics | $25–$75 / session | 4–12 weeks | Very low income, no insurance |
| University training clinics | $20–$50 / session | Varies by semester | Flexible schedules, comfort with supervised trainees |
| Wilson Therapy sliding scale | $30–$90 / session | Under 1 week | Licensed care without the private-practice price |
Prices reflect typical Los Angeles ranges and vary by provider. Couples and family sessions run higher than individual sessions everywhere, including here — our couples sessions start at $45.
When you book, you’ll pick an income bracket. No pay stubs, no tax returns — we use an honor system, because we’d rather trust people than make them bring documents to therapy.
You’ll have your exact per-session cost in writing before your first appointment. It never changes unless you ask us to change it.
Your fee affects nothing about your care. Clients paying $30 and clients paying $90 see the same team, get the same session length, and follow the same treatment planning.
Lost a job? Got a raise? Tell us and we’ll reset your rate — up or down — starting from your very next session.
Four typical situations we see every week, with real numbers. Your rate depends on your income bracket, but these show how the scale plays out in practice.
Maria works 20 hours a week and has no insurance. She qualifies for $30 sessions and comes weekly — about $120 a month, less than most LA gym memberships.
James and Priya earn a combined $95,000. Their couples sessions come to $75 each; they attend every other week, so roughly $150 a month for the two of them.
David was laid off in March. His rate dropped from $70 to $30 the same week he told us, and he switched to telehealth to save on parking and gas until he’s back on his feet.
Angela is enrolled in L.A. Care. After we verified her plan — which took one business day — her individual sessions cost her $0. See how Medi-Cal verification works.
Our sliding scale is a good fit if you want ongoing weekly or biweekly counseling with a licensed therapist and price has been the thing stopping you. It is not the right service in a few situations, and we’d rather tell you now than after you’ve booked:
If you’re in crisis right now, call or text 988 — the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free and answers 24/7. If you need psychiatric medication management, we’ll refer you to a psychiatrist rather than pretend counseling replaces it. And if you’re dealing with daily heavy substance use, weekly counseling alone isn’t a safe starting point — we’ll help you find a detox or intensive program first and continue as your counselor afterward.
Most new clients get a first appointment within a week. Your rate is confirmed in writing before you ever sit down.

Individual sessions run $30–$90 on our sliding scale, based on your household income. Couples sessions start at $45. You’ll know your exact rate before your first appointment, and it stays fixed unless you ask us to adjust it.
No. We use an honor system: you select an income bracket when you book and we take your word for it. We’d rather trust people than make them bring tax returns to therapy.
No. Every client sees the same team of licensed therapists and supervised associates regardless of rate. The sliding scale changes what you pay, not what you get — same session length, same care, same treatment planning.
We accept Medi-Cal managed care plans and several government assistance programs — see our Medi-Cal page. For private insurance, we can provide a superbill you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Our Insurance page has the full details.
Most clients start weekly for the first month or two, then move to biweekly as things stabilize. There’s no minimum commitment and no contract — you can pause or stop anytime.
Yes. We offer secure video sessions to anyone in California at the same sliding-scale rates. Our online counseling page explains exactly how it works.
Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what you’d like to change, and a bit of your history. Together you’ll set two or three concrete goals. There’s nothing to prepare — showing up is the whole job.
Talk to us anyway. We hold a limited number of reduced-rate spots below our standard scale, and if we genuinely can’t help, we’ll point you to L.A. community clinics and county programs that can.
